The X-021 sure is strikingly familiar at first glance...but then you realize it isn't what you thought it was.

Daihatsu built and showed the x-021 in 1991, three years after the Miata was already rolling out of dealerships. The x-021 had some great advantages and similarities to the miata. Among the similarities; shape, size, goal in mind, looks. Among the advantages... Aluminum Space Frame, Plastic reinforced body, 4 cylinder aluminum 1.6-liter-16-valve engine that put out about 140 horsepower, wishbone suspension, roll bar, Recaro seats, and a few other goodies which kept its weight down to a great 1550 lbs and safety intact.

Now it probably didn't have the lightest body...cause you know 1990's plastics and all. It also didn't have pop up headlights or name behind it like the Miata. It would have been more expensive than the miata due to all the technology, but it was a good show of recreating a small roadster such as an Elan. Too bad we didn't see these two, and more, compete. This concept gave way to the slightly heavier and uglier Daihatsu Copen concept which was produced.
